Our boarding school guide has advice specific to finding boarding schools in Canada. For insights that are more general (on how to evaluate school options) we recommend you review our hub on choosing a school. You can also read our guides to questions to ask private schools and questions students get asked at school interviews.
Private school expos are ideal launching pads for your school-finding journey. All expos are held in the fall at a number of centres across Canada. There are three expos hosted in Ontario, one in Toronto, one in Halton-Peel, and one in Ottawa. Expos are also held each fall in Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary. All are opportunities to speak with administrators from leading boarding schools within the regions in which the expos are held.
Word-of-mouth is another powerful tool in your school-finding arsenal. The Our Kids private school discussion forum allows you to discuss your options and debate topics around gifted education. You can use our community of parents, educational experts, alumni, and schools to help answer your questions and stimulate your thinking.
Attending open houses is obviously a great way to learn more about a school and get a feel for the environment. For some advice on open house visits, go here. For questions to ask that are specific to boarding programs, refer to our main boarding school hub.

Broadly speaking, the cost of boarding reflects the cost private school tuition in general, though with premiums added to cover housing and meals.
Many schools offer financial aid, including scholarships and bursaries. Financial aid is needs-based, and financial aid programs are created as a means of broadening the student base and attracting students, independent of means, who will contribute most to the culture of the school. Generally speaking, the larger and more expensive schools provide the most aid.
You can read more about financial aid and scholarships in our dedicated guide.

Parents around Canada are choosing coed boarding schools because they have the benefits of a coed school and a boarding school.
Whether a Canadian citizen or international student, Canadian coed boarding schools offer a specialized educational system devoted to the social and intellectual advancement of their students. Students and faculty thrive in this type of intentional community, co-existing in a social environment that fosters independence and mutual dignity.
Men and women interact and work together on a daily basis and coeducational schooling gives your child the opportunity to learn and interact along side the opposite sex, preparing them for life after school.
When you’re choosing a school for your child, be sure you choose the one that will work best for them. Kind of like buying them a new sweater, you want a school that makes them comfortable and is still respectable in your eyes. To make sure you’re choosing the best school, consider these:

The vast majority of Canadian students are enrolled in coed schools, just as the vast majority of Canadian adults graduated from coed schools. The coed experience is thought of as the norm, and certainly, in terms of numbers, it is.
The primary advantage of a coed learning environment is social. “What matters most about school is social life,” says Rubén A. Gaztambide-Fernández, an assistant professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. When it comes to social development, coed schools in some ways have the upper hand. “There is a positive dimension in terms of the large number of opportunities for relating to each other across gender lines.” Gaztambide-Fernández adds that “These students confront gender on a daily basis, so they're able to develop more nuanced strategies for dealing with the opposite sex—strategies that will be useful later on in life.”
In a coeducational learning environment, students are exposed to both male and female role models. They are also more likely to encounter a greater range of leadership styles, values and lifestyles. A 2006 study, “Perceptions and Attitudes of Students toward their Academic and Social Experiences in Canadian High Schools,” reported that they “offer students the opportunity to exchange a broad range of opinions and viewpoints with their peers since the schools comprise a mixed-gender student body.”
A benefit of coed schooling is that it reflects the environment that exists beyond the school walls as well as the subsequent environments—post-secondary institutions and professional life—that students will ultimately move into. That said, the same argument—that coed schooling reflects society at large—is also used in favour of single-gender schooling. Ultimately, the demeanor, talent, and social aptitude of the student will, and should, play a large role in determining the right educational environment.
