“A small school can be defined as any school that has 120 students or fewer,” says Amanda Dervaitis, executive director of the Ontario Federation of Independent Schools. “That being said, there are many schools that are much smaller, with numbers in the 10 to 20 range.”

Small school values

While these schools differ in their values and/or goals, they often share a common approach that involves a student-centred focus and increased flexibility and adaptability. There are many reasons families gravitate to small schools, and the influx of these types of schools means more choices for those looking for an alternate educational experience. Like most independent schools, there’s no one-size-fits-all model for small schools. Families need to find the environment that’s right for their children.

“Small schools are able to humanize education in a way some larger institutions are not,  and I believe many families choose these small schools because they make them feel like an individual rather than just a number in a system,” Dervaitis says. “You can get this type of experience in a small public school as well, but, unfortunately, these tend to be the schools that boards are trying to shut down.”

The focus of most small schools is on developing each student and nurturing their unique abilities, strengths, interests, and personal learning goals. They also support students through challenges and accommodate them as needed. “My school was borne out of my tutoring business which focused on supporting kids outside of school who had various academic and social-emotional needs,” says Dervaitis. “What we (myself and their parents) came to realize, in most cases, is that they didn't just need help outside of school but they needed something different in school as well. Summit was designed to support neurodiverse students and what we discovered was that in most cases it wasn’t the student that was the issue; rather the issue was the mismatching of the student with the traditional school setting.”

The small school experience

Picture a school where everyone knows each other's names, teachers and administrators know each student personally, older kids look out for younger kids and whole-group gatherings are the norm. Imagine a school that feels as close-knit as a family with personalized learning focused on each child’s unique abilities. This is often how small schools are described.

As the founder of a small school herself, Dervaitis has first-hand experience with this type of learning environment. Formerly High Park Day School, Summit Micro School is an independent school in west Toronto with a population of 30 to 35 students each year. “We are small not because we couldn’t grow but rather because we chose not to grow,” she explains. “Being small by design gives us the flexibility to support students who may struggle in traditional school environments and gives them the opportunity to really thrive.”

The small school experience often involves students of various ages working together. This may involve combined classes of a few consecutive grades or students of all grade levels participating in whole-school learning. “Our school accommodates students from Kindergarten through Grade 8 and we do a lot of learning as a whole group,” Dervaitis says.

Other small schools use their size to provide more customizable educational opportunities for students. “Our school focuses on supporting all types of learners and ensuring we meet kids exactly where they’re at,” says Paul Bamberger, principal of Junior Academy (another Ontario Federation of Independent Schools member) in Toronto.  With fewer than 100 students from JK to Grade 8, the school embraces its small size and the flexibility it has to address the needs of each student. “Every class follows the same schedule for the key academic subjects, so if we have a Grade 5 student who is performing above grade level in math, for example, they can join the Grade 6 class for that subject each day,” says Bamberger. “For other students who need more support in a specific subject, they’ll have the chance to work with smaller groups and get more focused support during that period.”

Coming together as a community is a big part of small school culture. Because there may be fewer kids in your grade, it’s important socially that all students get to know each other and form friendships. Every Friday Junior School students come together for an all-school assembly where they focus on character attributes, celebrate birthdays, and connect as a community. “Everyone knows everyone else by name and all students feel a strong sense of belonging,” Bamberger says.

Another opportunity for community building comes in the form of day trips. “We recently took all of our Grade 5 through Grade 8 students on a river rafting trip which proved to be amazing team building for the kids. They supported each other and worked together to have a really incredible day on the river.”

Daily life in a small school often looks like kids working together, cheering each other on, and sharing in their successes. It’s often less overwhelming, more inclusive, and easier for some kids to navigate. “What we hear time and again from parents, many of whom have had their kids in a different school that hasn’t been a good fit is, ‘my child is happy, they want to come to school, and they feel seen and heard’,” says Bamberger. “That’s how we measure success.”

Of course, this isn’t to say that some big schools have these benefits as well. But, arguably, they’re easier to achieve in smaller school environments.

The pros and cons of small schools

In offering a more personalized experience, small schools can meet the needs of individual children and provide the attention they need to be successful. Parents often appreciate this attention as well,  benefiting from the opportunity to communicate regularly with the teacher and/or administrator and feel like they’re part of the learning journey. While many independent and private schools can offer this type of close-knit community, the experience can be even more personal in smaller schools.

“For us, the reason we are committed to staying small is that we have some really important programs that address academic and social-emotional development and we have a variety of professionals on-site working with our students. In order to deliver that type of product to families, we need to keep our numbers under 100,” says Bamberger.

Dervaitis agrees. “This doesn't mean students are getting one-on-one attention,” she says, “but rather, the teachers are tuned in to what the students’ interests are, what support they may need, and how they can engage  with them in a meaningful way.”

Being part of a small school community might also mean that a student will have the same teacher year after year. Students often benefit from this type of strong connection and this can provide an opportunity to focus on accumulated growth rather than starting over each year. While some students may prefer the opportunity to learn from a variety of teachers, those who thrive in the small school environment can rely on this type of consistency for their success. For those who have different teachers each year, the students still benefit from getting to know all of the teachers in the building.

Program flexibility is another aspect of small school life that many families are drawn to. “There are families who have to travel throughout the year and others who have less flexible work schedules, and they come to small schools with the understanding that flexibility may be easier to obtain and the school might be able to work with them to ensure their child has a full year of learning despite these potential interruptions,” says Dervaitis.

This also works well for elite athletes who require extensive practice time and can’t attend classes in the traditional sense. Accommodations might include providing intermittent online learning, more flexible hours, or other accommodations that vary among schools. Of course, every small school is different and parents have to find a school that works with their family’s needs. “Generally speaking, small schools are more nimble and agile and can find opportunities that larger schools aren’t able to,” Dervaitis continues. “There’s also much less red tape, which can be restrictive in a larger system.”

Some families choose small schools because they’re interested in alternative programming such as increased outdoor time, a social-emotional focus, the arts, or athletics. Nature schools, for example, have children learning curriculum-related materials in an outdoor environment, and are popping up all over the place as an antidote to too much screen time.  Keep in mind that a simple no-phone policy might not be enough to engage students during school hours if it isn’t accompanied by the right replacement activities.  “Some small schools focus on project-based learning or inquiry, which works really well for some kids,” says Dervaitis. “It can be harder to offer this focused specialization in a larger school, though some do it very well.” With so much change in the world, schools are adapting and evolving to meet the needs of all types of learners. Having small schools as an option makes things easier for some students.

Some kids are really sensitive and find large classes and even larger schools overwhelming. “Some young people find the stimulation of a big school to be too much. For kids who don’t like crowds, small schools can provide a much calmer environment where they’re more comfortable learning,” Dervaitis notes. “There are kids with LDs, who are gifted, who are empathic and feel things deeply, who are sensitive to energy, among other things and they tend to find their place in a smaller learning environment.”

Social-emotional learning is often a focus in small school environments. “With small numbers we can really focus on social dynamics, giving teachers and administrators the chance to know each child, to help them build those social skills, teach them how to engage with one another, and continue to support them as they get older to ensure they feel safe being themselves,” says Bamberger. “Older students also have many opportunities to become mentors and buddies to younger students, again fostering that sense of community.”

Finally, small schools are often lauded for their academic adaptability. This seems to involve at least three different things:

Despite the benefits of small schools, they certainly aren’t for every child or family. There’s also a big difference between a school with 120 kids and one with 30. Socialization opportunities can be limited in a smaller school, with the child’s pool of potential friends significantly reduced. While this works well for some kids, others might find it too stifling or limiting. Before choosing a small school, families should ask lots of questions to better understand the population and whether it will be a good fit for their child.

Co-curriculars, athletics, and other opportunities might be limited, depending on the school’s size and resources. Those looking for robust programming, abundant sports teams, and other experiences, may not find these things in smaller schools. While some may be able to offer interesting clubs and co-curriculars and some might have athletics where they compete against other small schools, others will not. Again, doing research to find the right school is paramount.

Some students find a few years in a small school enough to get them back on track before they seek out larger schools to re-integrate into. Others like to get their start in a small school environment before joining a larger school. No matter how you approach it, having choices is always a good thing, and the growth of small schools gives parents just that.

School size matters. The following table summarizes some of the main benefits and limitations of small and big schools.

Note: This table, by its very nature, contains generalizations. There are small schools that share some attributes with larger schools and vice versa. Use this table as a starting point, and ask schools whether they specifically possess these characteristics.

Small school benefits

Large school benefits

Greater possibility for intimacy

Greater diversity of opportunities

  • When faculty members know each student, students are better supported and held more accountable—academically and behaviourally. Smaller faculty means an increased likelihood for cross-teacher collaboration to provide support.
  • A more expansive curriculum with greater variety allows students to choose more specialized classes, taught by specialist teachers. Greater number and variety of staff equipped to deal with your child’s unique psychoeducational needs.
  • Instantly inducts students into a close-knit, whole-school community. Allows them to form close bonds with peers. This can be especially important for shy and introverted children.
  • Offers more social opportunities and increases the likelihood of students finding like-minded peers who challenge and support them. Students (including shy ones) learn to take control of their social lives and carve their own paths. Avoids the “fishbowl” effect, and gives kids a healthy escape valve during their social development.
  • If your child loves sports but isn’t a star athlete, there’s an increased chance of them making school teams and playing a prominent role. There are also more opportunities to take leadership positions in core extracurriculars, like student government.
  • A wider range of extracurriculars. Allows students to experiment with different programs and discover new passions, which may change over time. Sports teams tend to be more competitive, with better coaching and resources.
  • Parents feel more connected to the school when they know faculty, administration, and other parents so well.
  • Even larger private schools tend to be highly responsive to parents, with faculty advisors assigned to individual students and parents.

Choosing the right small school

With the understanding that no two small schools are alike, conducting plenty of research is typically needed to find the right school for your child.

After you’ve read about the school and spoken to the administration and perhaps other families, the next, and most important step, is to plan a visit.  “Not only do you want to make sure that the school is a good fit for your child, but you want the school to ensure your child is a good fit for them. Especially in small schools, fit matters a lot,” says Bamberger.

When determining fit, Bamberger suggests parents ask a lot of questions. These might include:

Having a good understanding of your child’s learning profile will help make this process easier. While schools can help identify learning needs, it’s always helpful when choosing a new school to have a good picture of how your child learns best and what support, if any, they might need. Then you can assess how the school might be able to meet your child’s needs. “Try to be proactive and think about any needs your child might have and choose a school that can support those,” says Bamberger.

Smaller schools provide students with the space to explore their unique interests and talents, supported by attentive teachers who nurture individual growth. (Photo from The Giles School, OFIS member)

Parents should also consider the teachers at the school, the other students, and the physical environment:

Finally, what size of small is right for your child? Do you want a micro-school where your child will be part of a very small group, or a larger small school where there’s a different class for every grade? Getting a sense of daily activities and how classes work in a variety of small schools will help clarify what’s right for you.  Visiting the school will also help you decide whether it simply happens to be small or whether it intentionally embodies the values of a small learning community.
