From the old to the new, from life in the city to immersion in the outdoors, Ontario has it all.

Here’s OUR KIDS guide to boarding schools in Ontario. Ontario presents a rich selection of boarding schools—from historic co-ed institutions and progressive academies to international-focused schools in urban and countryside settings. Many offer rigorous academic programs, vibrant campus communities, and a range of extracurriculars tailored to student interests and goals.

Our boarding school guide has advice specific to Ontario boarding schools and schools in Canada. For insights that are more general (on how to evaluate school options) we recommend you review our hub on choosing a school. You can also read our guides to questions to ask private schools and questions students get asked at school interviews.

Private school expos

Private school expos are ideal launching pads for your school-finding journey. All expos are held in the fall at a number of centres across Canada. There are three expos hosted in Ontario, one in Toronto, one in Halton-Peel, and one in Ottawa. These are all great places to meet representatives of Ontario boarding schools.  Expos are also held each fall in Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary. All are opportunities to speak with administrators from leading Ontario boarding schools within the regions in which the expos are held.

Upcoming open house events

Attending open houses is obviously a great way to learn more about a school and get a feel for the environment. For some advice on open house visits, go here. For questions to ask that are specific to boarding programs, refer to our main boarding school hub.

The cost of attending a boarding school in Ontario typically aligns with the broader private school tuition range, but with additional fees to cover housing, meals, and round-the-clock supervision.

Many schools provide financial assistance, including needs-based bursaries and merit-based scholarships. These programs are designed to make boarding more accessible and to attract students who will enrich the school community, regardless of financial background. In general, larger and higher-tuition schools tend to offer more substantial financial aid.

For a deeper look at available options, visit our comprehensive guide on financial aid and scholarships.

  • Ontario is home to some of the oldest and most storied boarding schools in Canada, as well as some of the newest. Prince Andrew boarded here, as did Filipe VI, the current King of Spain. They join a long list of prominent Canadians whose contributions in public and private life began with a boarding school education.

While there are many excellent schools located within the province’s major cities, there are equally strong Ontario boarding schools found throughout more rural areas. Those in urban centres benefit from proximity to cultural and educational institutions, while others offer tight-knit communities, individualized learning, and strong outdoor education programs.

Graduation requirements in Ontario boarding schools

The Ontario Ministry of Education requires all private schools to register annually and submit statistical reports. Though private schools in Ontario operate as businesses or non-profits, the ministry inspects secondary schools to ensure they’re authorized to grant Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) credits.

High school graduation requirements are governed by the province. Students must complete at least 30 credits in grades 9–12. A credit represents completion of a full course.

Of these, 18 are mandatory credits covering core subjects like English, math, science, history, geography, arts, health and physical education, French, career studies, and civics.

The remaining 12 credits are electives. These may include technology, computer studies, graphic and performing arts, world studies, international languages, social studies, and cooperative education—allowing students to customize learning to match their goals.

All students must also complete 40 hours of community service over their high school career.

Additional requirements for boarding schools in Ontario

Many boarding schools in Ontario go beyond these provincial requirements. Columbia International College, for instance, mandates 36 credits for graduation. At Appleby College, students must study at least one international language—outside of Canada’s official languages, English and French. Others may require additional volunteer hours or academic achievements.

This blend of provincial standards and school-specific criteria ensures Ontario boarding schools deliver a rigorous and enriching academic experience, preparing students for university and beyond.
