Ontario is home to some of the oldest and most storied boarding schools in Canada, as well as some of the newest. Prince Andrew boarded here, as did Filipe VI, the current King of Spain. They join a long list of prominent Canadians whose contributions in public and private life began with a boarding school education.
While there are many excellent schools located within the province’s major cities, there are equally strong Ontario boarding schools found throughout more rural areas. Those in urban centres benefit from proximity to cultural and educational institutions, while others offer tight-knit communities, individualized learning, and strong outdoor education programs.
The Ontario Ministry of Education requires all private schools to register annually and submit statistical reports. Though private schools in Ontario operate as businesses or non-profits, the ministry inspects secondary schools to ensure they’re authorized to grant Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) credits.
High school graduation requirements are governed by the province. Students must complete at least 30 credits in grades 9–12. A credit represents completion of a full course.
Of these, 18 are mandatory credits covering core subjects like English, math, science, history, geography, arts, health and physical education, French, career studies, and civics.
The remaining 12 credits are electives. These may include technology, computer studies, graphic and performing arts, world studies, international languages, social studies, and cooperative education—allowing students to customize learning to match their goals.
All students must also complete 40 hours of community service over their high school career.
Many boarding schools in Ontario go beyond these provincial requirements. Columbia International College, for instance, mandates 36 credits for graduation. At Appleby College, students must study at least one international language—outside of Canada’s official languages, English and French. Others may require additional volunteer hours or academic achievements.
This blend of provincial standards and school-specific criteria ensures Ontario boarding schools deliver a rigorous and enriching academic experience, preparing students for university and beyond.
