There are many different types of entrance exams used by private and independent schools across Canada, the U.S., and other countries to inform admissions decisions.
Some schools require only one exam, some none at all. For those that do, the weight given to the test varies widely—from a minimal factor to a pivotal criterion.

The role of entrance exams in admissions is highly variable.
Some schools don’t require tests at all. For example, Appleby College waives testing under certain application deadlines.
Other schools require exams for all applicants and integrate test results into their selection process. But more commonly, tests are one piece of a broader, holistic evaluation. “Many schools use a holistic approach, so the SSAT or other exam is just one component balanced with academic records, extracurriculars, and student character,” says Bryan Ide, Educational Director at Key Education.
At many institutions, weaker exam results can be offset by strong grades or a compelling interview. “For us, the SSAT is only a small piece of the overall picture. We look for correlation with the report card,” says Maggie Houston‑White of Havergal College.
Similarly, Brentwood College School combines its own assessment, interviews, and test scores to evaluate potential rather than relying solely on test results, according to admissions director Clayton Johnston.
At UTS in Toronto, entrance exams carry more weight due to its competitive academic program. The SSAT is used to narrow the applicant pool before additional assessment rounds and interviews. “We use the SSAT to reduce the pool from 350–400 applicants to about 200 finalists,” reports Vice Principal Garth Chalmers.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Schools with highly rigorous or gifted curricula may rely more heavily on standardized testing, whereas others place greater weight on transcripts, interviews, essays, and extracurricular involvement.
The trend is clear: entrance exams are best treated as one of several indicators. Many talented students underperform in exam conditions, so schools should interpret test scores within the larger context of a student’s full profile—academic work, character, interests, and growth potential.
Beyond test scores, admissions committees often look for qualities such as intellectual curiosity, motivation, resilience, and community fit.
