There are many schools that also offer both boarding and ESL help. These kinds of schools are particularly well equipped to deal with international students. Benefits of English as a Second Language instruction in Canada

Providing your child with a foundation in and deepened understanding of English will benefit them immensely as they move ahead with their career pursuits. If you send your child to an English language school for at least three years you will likely be giving them fluency in English. Many private and boarding schools in Canada offer highly personalized instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL) but you will need to consult with each school to find out the kind of instruction offered.

Will I have to pay extra for ESL instruction?

English as a Second Language instruction varies widely from one school to another. Many schools may already have budgeted internally to account for ESL training while others may charge higher tuition to offer close instruction to children. Some schools may be able to tailor English tutoring to the needs of individual children.

In most cases, ESL will be taken as an extra class - so your child will be spending more time overall in class than English speaking students. Consult with each school to find out its individual policy concerning English as Second Language instruction.

What kind of English is taught?

Some people distinguish between American English and British English. The English taught in Canadian schools is closest to British English but differences between British and American English are really restricted to some spelling idioms and a few distinct words and turns of phrase that are easily understood by speakers of either dialect. There is essentially very little difference between the two "kinds" of English. English language schools in Canada provides children with an understanding of both variations.

What is taught and who is teaching the ESL?

When your child is instructed in English as a Second Language, the essentials that he or she will be taught will include pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. All schools in Canada advertising English as a Second Language Programs must have qualified teachers who have a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate or diploma.
