The institution supporting French language teaching in Poland is the French Institute in Poland, which cooperates with many institutions. This includes the Ministry of National Education, Polish educational authorities, educational establishments (including a network of bilingual schools), Alliances françaises, university institutes, departments of Roman studies, and Polish associations of French-language teachers. There are Polish French immersion schools in Warsaw, Kraków, Poznań, Wrocław, Łódź, Gdańsk, Szczecin, Bydgoszcz, Lublin, and Rzeszów.
What’s the best way to learn French?
For some time now, it’s been widely held that one of the most effective ways of teaching a foreign language is language immersion. Another term for linguistic immersion is immersion in language and is not just about the fact that participants are "immersing" only in French language lessons.
Exposure to French is continual and occurs naturally throughout the entire day. One of these types of opportunities is provided by private and non-public schools in Poland. In these schools, children are taught the vocabulary and grammar and French, but also to speak this language fluently. One of the main aims is effective communication, and this achieved through applied practice and an immersive environment.
Private language immersion school provides daily, at least a four-hour instruction in the French language. This method is effective because it works in a natural way, students are forced to think in this language. Since it’s best to start learning French as early as possible, there are even private kindergartens and even nurseries using the language immersion method.
In preschool, the structure of language is learned and applied in everyday situations. Children of this age have great auditory skills (including fast acoustic absorption): at the very beginning of learning there is a gradual familiarity with the language, its sound and other properties. Continuous contact with the French language means that the student understands more and more until the moment comes when he or she starts speaking.
Poland schools teaching the French language by linguistic immersion are mostly various types of non-public schools. Some of these types of facilities provide the opportunity to enroll in bilingual classes, where the foreign language is French and the native language is Polish.
Learning in these schools takes place at a very high level. Some offer international programs such as International Baccalaureate (IB). Classes are held in small groups and in an individualized way. Some of the schools with language immersion are international institutions, in which education is conducted exclusively or almost entirely in a foreign language, or bilingual institutions.
The teacher, in many of these schools, has the opportunity to focus on the needs of each student. The curriculum is adapted to individual predispositions.
In schools where the language immersion method is used, students effectively improve their skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Benefits of the language immersion method in Poland
It is well-known that learning by means of language immersion is not only learning a given language. Pupils exploring the complexities of the French language, learn to better understand it, improve their cognitive skills, and often become more creative. Learning French in a private school in Poland using linguistic immersion has a lot of pluses. It is worth mentioning its most important benefits, which are:
- Ability to be in an environment where French language is used exclusively or frequently
- Combining learning with play components
- Natural absorption of the French language
The linguistic immersion method is used in an increasing number of schools thanks to its effectiveness. You can find it in kindergartens, primary schools, middle schools, and high schools across Poland. Institutions are becoming more popular, which is undoubtedly a very good thing.
It’s also worth mentioning that the linguistic immersion method is one of the most tested methods of teaching French. It is successfully used in North America, for example in Canada, where the first successes thanks to the use of linguistic immersion were noted in the 1960s. Thanks to this method, students have greater ease of speaking freely in a given language, as well as greater readiness to make contacts with peers from around the world.
