Why language immersion?
Immersion is an effective method of teaching English because it works in a natural way. It involves getting gradually used to the English language. The most frequently mentioned advantages of linguistic immersion are:
- Learning without stress, in a natural way
- Learning combined with play
- Intuitive learning
This method treats English as a tool to learn about the surrounding world. Learning English in this way can be effective and engaging. There are no flashing memory cards or tedious learning of grammar.
Learning English in language schools in Poland
The best way to learn English is to go abroad, to a country where it’s the official language—then you’ll be surrounded by it every day. However, we do not always have the option of such a trip. Hence language immersion in your place of residence, such as Poland, becomes a great alternative.
The English language is best to learn from an early age. Children can begin to learn words and phrases in kindergarten. At this stage of development, children quickly absorb everything from their immediate environment. This immersive environment can be a very natural way to learn. Language immersion, research has shown, can also be a great way to improve overall cognitive skills.
It’s worth mentioning that the linguistic immersion method has been successfully used for over 40 years in schools in North America, for example in Canada. This method is quite universal and can be successfully used both in younger and older children. Most students, in this setting, quickly engage and automatically switch to thinking in English.
What does the practice of learning English in such schools look like?
Communication and teaching of other subjects takes place in English. In private schools that teach the language through immersion, English is not the subject. It’s treated as a second language that’s systematically and naturally absorbed.
Why is learning so effective at schools where the language immersion method is used?
This is mainly due to the very quick rejection of barriers in communicating with others. There is no stereotyping of English, and the student quickly gains the courage to speak in English. Spending time together in a peer group, various activities, and practical classes are good opportunities to apply English in practice.
English is spoken every day, and a systematic listening to the sound and pronunciation of the English language naturally leads to the acquisition of knowledge.
The method of language immersion can also be used outside of school, in everyday life—speaking only in English, watching films or series without a teacher and subtitles (or with English subtitles), reading books and articles in English instead of in Polish, and listening to English songs.
Poland schools that use language immersion are also often able to use bilingual programs. This kind of teaching is offered by bilingual private kindergartens and non-public schools, where students can learn at various levels. It is an ideal way to learn for students interested in learning foreign languages or are talented with language.
