Motivation is the key to student success

Motivation & student success

Wondering how to help your child improve their grades? Motivation is a critical factor missing from the lives of many students. But how do you keep your child motivated? Look for a school that offers a supportive curriculum and culture that fosters motivation. The following techniques, projects and curricula are known to increase a student's motivation and overall interest in learning, which correlates to greater success.

Private and public schools across the country are working towards implementing the educational tenants discussed below. Check with your child's school, (or potential school) to learn what they are doing to help your child stay motivated.

Motivation through curriculum

Integrated, cross-curricular projects

Projects that are integrated across subjects give students the freedom to complete the project in a way that interests them, and is fine-tuned to their passions and abilities. "When it's integrated, each student can find something they like and everyone can get into it," reports Katrina Schwartz, a writer with Mind Shift (What Keeps Students Motivated to Learn? March 13, 2014). Integrated, or cross-curricular projects are being used by teachers across the United States and Canada to help keep students engaged and motivated.

According to Chris Ruch, curriculum director at Northmount School, a Catholic school in Toronto, Ontario, "we are looking to align the various strands within courses to enable teachers to offer greater cross-curricular integration. Research shows that this helps students grasp a deeper comprehension of the themes covered. In social studies, for example, we are enriching the content through the introduction of some classic courses ranging in chronological order from the ancient world, through the medieval societies, to European settlers' migration to Canada. The strands will be further aligned to texts both in language arts and concepts in science".

Integrated curriculum is also a key tenant in classrooms at The Dragon Academy, a Reggio Emilia-inspired school with gifted programming (in Toronto, Ontario) . "I’m really interested in cross-curricular potential," says high school teacher Dr. Susannah Brower. "Even in my own subjects, I find that I can relate what they’ve been learning in one subject to the others I teach, and my colleagues at Dragon are really engaged in creating projects that tie together what we’re all teaching.  We plan our course outlines so that we can hit related material at the same time".

At private schools like The Dragon Academy and Northmount School, motivating students is a priority. "The incorporation of experiential learning that engages all of a student's senses is critical for the delivery of our curriculum," says Manfred von Vulte, Northmount's deputy headmaster, and well-known educational author. "Our lessons provide numerous opportunities for movement, expression, experimentation, presentation, and the building of core skills in order to achieve extraordinary results. Our enriched curriculum has a proven track record with remarkable CAT3 and EQAO standings, enabling parents and students access to their school of choice beyond the eighth grade. We ensure that all of the doors of opportunity for participation in the arts, maths, sciences, languages, athletics, theatre, and community service are always open to each student".

Interest-based, relevant curriculum

In addition to offering students the freedom to complete a project in a way that interests them, through cross-curriculum opportunities, it's also important that the school you choose for your child has a curriculum that is relevant to students and appeals to their interests. Schwartz states, "students like to know why they're learning something and they want to access that information through a lens that interests them". She interviewed student Paris Gramann, who said, "if teachers give broad guidelines for the project, then have students do something they're interested in, it will bring students along the whole time. Treat students like adults. If the students feel like they're worth it, they'll act more like adults".

Treating students like adults helps keep them motivated, and fosters a sense of mutual respect. "I taught Dante’s Inferno, the whole original text in translation, to my grade 10 English students," says Dr. Brower. "They all read it, they all understood it, and they worked very hard on it.  I could see how proud they were to grapple so successfully with a text many people would think was just beyond them, something you study in university if you’re majoring in Italian literature".

Private schools often have more flexibility when it comes to following student's interests. With a supportive, autonomous environment, staff have the flexibility they need to engage and support students through the curriculum. "I believe in following my students’ interests, but also in directing them to new interests," says Dr. Brower.  "I demand a lot of them, I want them to keep working on a project or an issue until it’s the best it can be, and I want them to know I believe it can be really remarkable," she says. "I really get to know each student, to understand what he or she is capable of, and what’s getting in the way of success.  I believe the core of my job is helping them reach their potential.  I’m never too busy to help, or in too much of a hurry to listen".

Hands-on learning

Hands-on learning and interactive lessons are another great way to keep students motivated. Shawnigan Lake School, an independent boarding school in British Columbia has implemented the idea of hands-on learning through their living laboratory. Composed of different strands, including community service and the environment, the living laboratory offers students unique opportunities for hands-on learning experiences. "What we are seeing is that it’s not enough to just come here and do your thing, develop your talents and get your qualifications for the next stage of your sporting or fine arts success. You have to be aware of the world locally and globally," says headmaster David Robertson.

When used to it's full potential, a student's learning environment can enrich and inspire, motivating youth to become inquisitive and engaged learners. "We are fortunate to be on 300 acres, so two years ago we planted 21, 000 trees in our forestation project," Robertson says. "Our students do the maintenance and also are involved in our organic garden. We have a salmon hatchery and this year it was so exciting because some of the salmon that started as eggs finally made their way back. We also have our own composting and recycling facility so we produce our own soil for our gardens from those facilities. That is all part of our living lab which is pretty special and it is designed to acknowledge our responsibilities to enhance and use the world properly".

Hands-on learning opportunities such as those offered at Shawnigan Lake School connect to student's lives and interests. Such hands-on learning opportunities are one of the best motivators to help students achieve and exceed personal learning goals, ignite new passions and draw connections between the world and the classroom.

Motivation through school culture

Teachers who care

Knowing that teachers care is the number one thing that students said makes them want to try hard and succeed, according to Schwartz who writes that students "reiterated that high expectation and strong support from teachers are crucial". Student comments included "I feel motivated because the teachers make me feel worth it [and] I feel that I have responsibility and credibility," she reports.

Parents certainly take notice when their children have teachers who truly care about their child. Vanessa, whose son is a grade 10 student at the Dragon Academy attributes his success to the relationships her son has built at school. "With students and teachers, he's relaxed, he can ask anybody anything. My son has blossomed. He loves going to school, he’s engaged in his subjects, his grades now reflect his strengths because the teaching and structure of the classes allow him to demonstrate his potential," she says.

Mrs. Healy, whose three daughters attend Trafalgar Castle School, has also noticed the positive impact of caring teachers. "We were initially drawn to the idea of smaller class sizes but realize now that idea has resulted in something even greater.  Not only do our daughters have the opportunity to develop stronger connections with their educators but all of the students in the class seem to share a similar passion for learning," she says. "Our daughters have become self-confident, highly motivated students who continue to develop their opinions and leadership skills.  They have a strong sense of self and a passion for learning.  As Trafalgar students, they are now empowered to become who they were meant to be.  Instead of just floating along with the current they now have a paddle in the water".

Acknowledge failure is okay and carefully frame feedback and evaluations

At Rothesay Netherwood School in New Brunswick, student success is determined by effort, not by grades. "We define excellence as a student making the most of their potential in the time that they are at this school," says head of school Paul Kitchen. "So at our school rewards never happen because of marks or standing, it is effort grades. We have nine academic reports and three of those have academic grades and six of those reports have effort grades. Through our practice and reality the effort grades are a true marker of success".

A school like Rothesay Netherwood that has a strong culture of support is particularly important when it comes to intrinsic motivation for students, especially when compared to a broad educational environment across our country which is so results driven. According to Schwartz's article, this trend of support is a vital element to student motivation: "because the culture of their schools encourage them to learn from mistakes, [students] can clearly articulate what they'd do differently next time and even laugh about it," she writes.

Schools can foster a supportive environment where students are motivated to do well by being cognizant of how feedback is framed. "One tip students offer to educators: when evaluating student work, frame feedback in terms of the learner's goals instead of referring to the standards. Goals are more motivating for students to hear," reports Schwartz. "While the education policy world may be obsessed with standards, students don't care about them. They'd rather hear how the skill connects to their lives and interests."

Finding a school with a supportive culture and a curriculum designed to keep your child motivated is not only the key to academic success, but also to a happy child, which is ultimately the mission of any parent.
