When people think about private school registration and admission the first thing that comes to mind is ‘paperwork’. The reality is that enrolling in a private school is more than applying pen to paper and handing it in—it’s a step-by-step application process that includes parents as well as prospective students.
Here are some school admission tips to get you started:
When you are interested in a private school, the first step is applying—once you’ve been through all the elements of the application process and your child has been accepted, the registration part comes into play.
For some private schools, wait lists can be as long as two to three years—even more. Others work on a year-by-year basis. Before ploughing through paperwork and paying application fees, find out what your chosen schools’ policies are to find out if your child might even have a chance of getting a spot. If so, make sure you know what the due dates are and be prepared to have everything ready by that time—especially if it’s a school that is high in demand.
There is no substitute for actually visiting the facility. Open houses are wonderful opportunities to do exactly this. While many parents base their decision on the reputation of the school, only visiting will give you a sense of the culture and teachers which, in turn, will paint a better picture as to whether or not the school is the best fit for your child. It’s also a good opportunity to get detailed answers to questions as well as confirmation of other important dates.

Every private school has their own methodology when it comes to the admissions process—don’t be afraid to ask in advance. Many require entrance exams or academic assessments. Parent/child/principal interviews are also common to discuss expectations as well as to see whether or not the school is the right fit for the family and vice versa.
If you are introducing your child into a new school environment at a higher grade, this question is absolutely crucial. After academic assessments, it can be devastating for many parents to discover that their children are not up to the educational standard that they should be for their grade level. Sadly, simply asking their current teachers won’t necessarily give the answer. A good way to assess the situation is to go directly to the appropriate provincial education website and read the curriculum expectations for each grade in order to understand what your child should be learning versus what they have been learning.
There are some excellent private schools that have programs to help students with different needs. While you may love one school, it might not have the support in place if your child needs specialized attention in certain areas. Conversely, you want to make sure that the school of your choice offers the programs you want—if you’re looking for a sports school, or one that offers a specific language or has a particular religious affiliation, now is the time to find out rather than after registering.
Specific admission dates exist for a reason—trying to send applications in early in the hopes of getting ahead of the line will only backfire. Conversely, when you do send in your application, make sure you are thorough and have included all the necessary information. Patience is a huge virtue—school registrars are swamped with applications and aren’t trying to withhold information, so recognizing it is a process and that you will get answers as soon as they have them will go a long way in your future relationship.
There is the reality that some children won’t get into certain schools for a variety of reasons, whether it’s due to capacity or academically related. Don’t let that stop you from trying elsewhere—the right fit could be just around the corner.
